A Whole New World

This was the sight in my bathroom a few hours ago.

It was a black hair dye extravaganza!  You see, I've decided to go gothic.
Just kidding.  (did you think I was serious?)
Here is a picture of my finger in it's current state.

(Don't worry purple pinky I am not replacing you) My purple pinky is intentional but the black ring finger is not.

Jordyn is preparing for the upcoming CYT performance of Aladdin this weekend and true to form for a theater gal she must get into character.  So mom had to assist with a little "temporary" hair color this afternoon. I didn't realize there was a hole in my glove until all was said and done. I guess we will see how temporary this temporary color is when it fades from my finger.  Guess I'll be explaining this one to my M.O.P.S. group tomorrow.

I was searching for some things tonight and I came across a few articles from 2006.  Jordyn was featured in Girl's Life magazine's annual "Back to School" issue.  She had written them a letter expressing her displeasure on how home school kids were often left out at back to school time.  Much to her surprise, they called her, interview her and featured her in their magazine.  They sent out some really cool photographers to do a photo shoot with her too.  (here is the Back-to-school article and here is another that our local paper did as a result of the interview.)

Five years ago Jordyn needed me for different things in her life like lesson planning, Algebra lessons, preparing "school" lunches at Beck's Cafe' among other things.   Tonight mom was needed in "Beck's salon".  You know what they say: Any mother could perform the jobs of several air traffic controllers with ease.

Jordyn getting into character

I am thankful for each moment I have had with my girls (even if it left my fingers black).  Time goes faster each year.  Every moment with our family is a true gift from The Lord so be sure to cherish them!

I'm off to scrub my finger some more so I'll close with one of my favorites by Erma Bombeck:
IF I HAD MY LIFE TO LIVE OVER  by Erma Bombeck
I would have talked less and listened more.
I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained and the sofa faded.
I would have eaten the popcorn in the "good" living room and worried much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the fireplace.
I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather rambling about his youth.
I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed.
I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it melted in storage. I would have sat on the lawn with my children and not worried about grass stains.
I would have cried and laughed less while watching television, and more while watching life. I would have gone to bed when I was sick, instead of pretending the earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren't there for the day.
I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn't show soil or was guaranteed to last a lifetime.
Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, I'd have cherished every moment, realizing that the wonderment growing inside me was the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle.
When my kids kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, "Later. Now go get washed up for dinner."
There would have been more "I love you's" and more "I'm sorry's"
. . . but mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute . . .
look at it and really see it . . . and never give it back."

I heart Fridays

Whoa?  It's Friday again?  Where does the time go?  Friday is good because that means it's time to link up with my buddies at Company Girl

My youngest daughter is in an upcoming production of Aladdin presented by Christian Youth Theater.  Tech week begins this week and while it will be wide open around our home, I know all the hard work Jordyn and the other cast members have put into the show will be worth it.  (I'll post pictures soon).

With all the recent 'drama' and talk of theater that has been a buzz in our home the past few months, I keep reflecting on a quote I heard from Priscilla Shirer in her "He Speaks To Me" video.  She said,

"On the stage of life, if you are too busy playing someone else who is going to play you?"

This hit home for me.  Like many women, so many times I find myself comparing my life to others.  Of course I know better but I still do it!  Even when looking at blogs, I find myself wishing I had better writing skills, or wanting to be more crafty so I could post one of those cool "how to tutorials".  (I could post a "how-to-burn-everything-you-cook-and-make-the-smoke-detector-go-off-every-meal tutorial". lol).  Seriously, I am thankful for the recent reminder I have received.  God made me "fearfully and wonderfully made" (Psalms 139) for His purposes.  I am unique and I am His original.   You, too, are fearfully and wonderfully made in a unique and special way for His plans (and He has plans for each of us!!)  I pray I can keep my eyes focused on Him and obey what He has called me to do so I can glorify Him in every part of my life.  I pray this for you too!

I'll close with one of my favorite quotes by John Mason:

You were born an originalDon't die a copy

**By the way, thank you all for the kind comments regarding the exam I took last week.  I passed!!!!   I am still in shock and I give The Lord ALL the credit as I had not taken an exam since I was in high school. I have one more portion of testing to go through in a few months.  Lord willing, my goal is that at the end of this journey I will be state leveled and will be able to freelance as an interpreter for the deaf and hard of hearing.  I'll keep you posted and I appreciate your prayers. I trust The Lord will lead and direct my steps in this area of my life.

More Thursday Randomness and Pete stories

In case you missed the last Thursday random happenings, here’s another snippet of random happenings from inside The Burton house:

Jim: (shivering and walking into the kitchen dressed in multi-layers):  Gosh!
me:  What’s wrong?  you cold?
Jim:  It’s freezing in here!   I don’t know how you do that? (looking at my bare feet)
Me: Do what?  Walk around with no shoes?
Jim:  (teeth close to chattering) Yes!!
Me:  (with a southern accent and extending my belly as far as it will go to appear pregnant while waddling around the kitchen) “That’s right baby.  I’m a GRIT.…born to be barefoot and pregnant.  Hur, hur.”
Jordyn:  (watching unamused) Grit?
Me: (still in southern voice mode) Yup.  Girl raised in the south.
Jordyn:  You said GRIT.
Me:   I know! (in my arrogant “let me teach you a thing or two” tone)
Jordyn:  Grit would be a girl raise in the...  You didn’t put an “s” on it so it is just raise in the THE.  No "s" for "south" mom!
Me:  Oh.  Well.  Um… then I guess I’m a “GRITS”.

Dinner table a few minutes later

Jordyn:  I live in an icebox (that’s southern for refrigerator)
Me:  You’re cold too??
Jim: (as if I wasn't in the room) It’s because your mom keeps the heat set on 64.
Me:  For the love of Pepita. (*this is my writing segue to the next section in case you care*) I’m trying to save money so when summer gets here I can keep it really cold in here.  I don’t like hot and by the way, I want an air condition unit for our bedroom this summer so it will be cold in there while I sleep. (batting my eyelashes)
Jim:  Ah-ha!!! You ARE trying to kill me!  (looks to Jordyn and says) Some women poison their husbands.  She just tries to freeze hers to death.

Random Pete comments The Burtons have adapted:

“We’re off to Peter’s Donuts!”

This is one of many sayings my husband had coined for our family.  Every time we leave the house, he says it.  He has been doing this so long it is a family tradition and we don’t give it a second thought—and we've recently added our best British accent to our family’s departure phrase.

Last summer, our daughter Amanda stayed with us while her husband was deployed.  She, too, had a Pete saying that spread around the family like wild-fire. (well, okay..I’m the only who copied her). Everything last summer  was “for the love of Pete” this and “ for the love of Pete” that.  Whether good or bad, she added the phrase “for the love of Peter” (minus the British accent, of course.)

This brought many random questions to our family as we pondered who was this Pete we often referred too and what did he have to do with it?  (We even changed the words to the Tina Turner song, "What's Love Got To Do With It" and instead we would sing, "What's Pete got to do, got to do with it?").

At one point in the summer, Amanda jokingly started calling me “Pete”.    One afternoon I leaned over to my infant granddaughter and said, “Imagine if you were a boy we could name you Pete.”  How odd !! (all due respect to any and all Petes out there).  She certainly didn’t look like a Pete.  So, in the nature of randomoness (which we Burtons do best),  I decided to call her other forms of Pete. Peter. Petricka. Petra.  Finally I uttered ,"Pepita".  “...for the Love of Pepita!”.   And my nickname for her was born.  My daughter's in-laws are Puerto Rican so to be sure the nickname was appropriate Amanda asked them about the meaning.  Lo and behold  it means little seed.   (I'm such a grandma--here's my little Pepita):

To bring this Thursday evening randomness to a close I’ll leave you with a joke a missionary friend told me years ago:

Pete and Repeat fell out of the boat, who was left?

Repeat.

Pete and Repeat fell out of the boat, who was left?

Repeat.

Pete and Repeat fell out of the boat, who was left?

Repeat.

(That's all I got for ya!  If you want an inspirational tie-in, maybe read first or second Peter?  I dunno...for the love of Pete, I have no clue why I started typing this post!)

Shake, shake, shake

My Bible reading has found me in Colossians this week and has left me churning some of my favorite verses:

Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.  Colossians 4:5-6 (NIV)

I have really been examining my speech to be sure I am, as the Message translation of these verses says:

Be gracious in your speech. The goal is to bring out the best in others in a conversation, not put them down, not cut them out.

One of my man's favorite preachers/teachers is Ravi Zacharias.  (**Jim's other favorite Preacher/teachers are Jim Cymbala and Francis Chan.  You can imagine his excitement when we received this information from Brooklyn Tabernacle yesterday about their upcoming conference.  Dude, it was like Christmas day all over again around here!**)

A few years ago, Jim shared this story with me that he had heard Ravi share.  It is one of my all time favorites and I have been thinking about it this week along with my Colossians verses:

There was once a glass saltshaker. And in this saltshaker lived –you guessed it!- thousands and thousands of grains of salt.

Life was great for the salt inside this saltshaker: all the grains of salt were surrounded by other grains of salt, and they all lived happily in the saltshaker – protected from the unknown of the outside.

One day, two of these grains of salt struck up a conversation with each other (as grains of salt tend to do).

One salt said to the other: “Boy, isn’t life GRAND?! We’re here, in this saltshaker on this kitchen table, without a care in the world! Everyone in here looks, thinks and acts just like us! This is SO GREAT!”

To this, the other grain of salt replied: “What are you happy about? Don’t you realize that, every once in a while, a giant hand comes out of the sky, lifts up this saltshaker, and SHAKES it into a giant bowl of soup? Every time that happens, some of us fall out and are never seen again! Who knows what happens to them? They are shaken into that soup and we have NO IDEA where they go from there!”

At this point, a wise old grain of salt came up and interrupted them. “Guys,” he said, “don’t worry about it. That giant hand may one day shake us into a giant bowl of soup, but one thing is certain: that soup will never taste the same again.”

I want to be "salty".  I want to make people thirsty for Jesus.  My prayer is that when I leave a conversation that I can point the person to Jesus in such a way of Truth and encouragement that they will never be the same again.  It is a tall order, however, with the help of The Holy Spirit we can be obedient and "salty".  Do you want to be "salty" too?  Let's be ready.  Never know when it will be time for that "shake, shake, shake!"

Little Frogs, a Hop (blog style) and a Giveaway

Today is Friday and that means it's time for Company Girl Coffee!  I love Fridays as I get to stay in touch with some amazing women in Blogville.  It is great "virtual fellowship" and a way to pray and intercede for each other (who doesn't need some prayer??)  This week we are having a "Blog Hop" and you can join too!  Just link up and join the party!!

Karen Ehman had this story posted over on her blog yesterday.  Once I read it, I knew I had to re-post this precious story.  Like me, maybe you have read this story before but I believe it is worth a reading again.

There once was a bunch of tiny frogs who arranged a climbing competition. The goal was to reach the top of a very high tower.
A big crowd had gathered around the tower to see the race and cheer on the contestants. The race began. No one in the crowd really believed the tiny frogs would reach the top of the tower.
Heard throughout the race were statements such as, “Oh, way too difficult,” “They will never make it to the top,” “Not a chance they will succeed,” and “The tower is too high.”
The tiny frogs began collapsing, one by one—except for those who, in a fresh tempo, were climbing higher and higher. The crowd continued to yell, “It is too difficult! No one will make it!”
More tiny frogs got tired and gave up. But ONE continued to climb higher and higher. This one refused to give up.
At the end of the race, all had given up climbing the tower except for the one tiny frog who, after a big effort, was the only one who reached the top!
All of the other tiny frogs wanted to know how this one frog managed to do it. They asked him how he had found the strength to succeed and reach the goal, despite the horrible odds and the cruel taunts and jeers of the crowd.
It was simple. You see, it turns out that the one determined, focused, and disciplined frog …….was utterly and completely……….DEAF!!!!
Press-on dear sisters (and brothers)--keep pressing on until the end.  Run the race and don't quit (Heb. 12:1).   Whatever it is The Lord has called you to do--do it and do it for His glory.  If the Lord has told you that you "can"--then you CAN!!  Who cares what those other negative voices in your life say, listen to the One True Voice and allow The Father to guide you and direct you in His ways (Ps. 32:8).   If He is leading you, He will carry you and He will help you!    Trust Him and Him alone!!  May we fix our eyes on Him and plug our ears to them (the nay-sayers).  May we focus on Him, our Lord and Savior, and give Him our all.  May we also turn a 'deaf ear' to all that tries to distract us from His voice and His call on our life.

I'm signing off  as I am getting ready to go "face a fear" that I have avoided for a few years.  I am taking an exam this morning (nothing medical).  I have not taken a test in YEARS (20+) but I am leaving the results in The Lord's hand.  Regardless of the outcome, I am just excited to face this fear.   For me, that alone is a huge step and a victory.
Oh--Don't forget to check out my giveaway (click here).  I will pick a winner this weekend!!   Have a BLESSED weekend!

Tada! Tuesday

Last week I mentioned doing an upcoming giveaway and today is that day.

A few weeks ago, I ran across a book at the store and decided to flip through the pages.  (I am not a fan of all these e-books.  I am still old-school and love a good ol' fashion book that I can mark in, write in and highlight.) Each page I flipped to really ministered to me, so I bought the book.  I've been devouring it  since.  I even invited my book on a date Friday night to Chipotle (before rumors start to fly, my man was invited first but he had an appointment and couldn't go.)

me and my book on a date

This book is one of my all time favorites (ever!)  The Lord has used this book to really speak to me the past few weeks.  I think you will really enjoy this book too, therefore, I want to bless someone and give away a copy.

The book I am talking about is "Do You Know Who I Am? (and other brave questions women ask)"  Tada!!!

This is the first Angela Thomas book I have read and she rocks!  (My friend Jennifer tried to get me to read her books years ago but I guess I'm just a slow learner.  Thank for nudging me Jennifer!!  You were right!)

Here are a few chapter titles:

  • Do You Know I am Afraid to Dream Big? (He is Worthy)
  • Do You Know I am Trembling Inside? (He is My Comfort)
  • Do You Know I am Worn Out?  (He Does Not Grow Weary)
  • Do  You Know I am Disappointed?  (He is my Hope)

This is just a snippet of topics.  If you want to win your own copy, just leave me a comment (that's all you have to do is leave a comment....no hooking up on Twitter, jumping through hoops, signing away your first born--nothing more, just a comment--see I really am old school!!!)   I will announce the winner over the weekend.

I can't resist leaving you with a picture of my little Valentine and precious grand-daughter.

***Just a neat update!  I just received an email from blogger friend, Heather over at A Place of Quiet Rest that I won her give-away from last week.  I'm so excited...I've never won a thing in my life!  Yippee!!***

YAY, Amen and LOTS of spirit fingers

What time is it?  Time for a Saturday praise!  Little Miss Jaelynn (my grand daughter) had her check-up yesterday with her cardiologist.  In case you are new to the blog, Jaelynn has heterotaxy syndrome.  (You can read more here and here).

Back to the praise - the cardiologist said the "flap" has closed by itself and there will be NO need for heart surgery!

Praise The Lord!!  Can I get an Amen? AMEN! Anyone want to join this giddy grandma and do some happy dancin'?

Here is little Miss Jaelynn (10 months now) excited about her good news.   Thank you all for your prayers the past year.

The LORD has done great things for us and we are filled with joy. Psalms 126:3

Painting The Barn

Photo J. Sullivan

Kelly over at Kelly's Korner (love that gal!) had a great topic for today.  She is asking for "Beauty Secrets".

I can't wait to read all the great tips.  Shoot!  I'm over 40 and will take all the help I can get.

Off the top of my head I wanted to chim in to the tips:

1. Wrinkle help the natural way- My hair dresser Georgine just recently cut me some great bangs.  Since I am not a believer in Boxtox (and even if I were --I can't afford it!!) I needed a way to cover up this massive crater that is growing deeper by the week on my forehead.  Yes, the  one that has decided to take up permanent residence on my forehead.  *sigh*

2. "Paint the Barn Baby!" One of my personal mottos.  A dear Pastor many years ago randomly addressed women in the middle of his sermon and said "if the barn needs to be painted...then paint it and be sure to put two coats on it if needed!"  Some women took offense but I took it to heart (and saw great humor in the statement).  So......my "barn" gets lots of painting each and every day. Several coats, in fact.   The way these wrinkles are coming in, I might need to use 3 coats.

3.  Fire extinguisher sized products - Click here to read more!

Untie the ribbons and flashing back

How did it get so late so soon?
It's night before it's afternoon.
December is here before it's June.
My goodness how the time has flewn.
How did it get so late so soon?
~Dr. Seuss

Yesterday I organized some files on my computer and ran across my "oldies" photo file (meaning time not age!!).   Seems like these "oldies" were just yesterday.  I am sure all agree that time is zipping faster than ever these days.  Makes me want to enjoy every moment of life and live with no regrets.

Me and My Mom 30 years ago and 3 months ago

My precious princesses from 17 years ago and  12 weeks ago

Each day comes bearing its own gifts.  Untie the ribbons.  ~R. Schabacker

Speaking of gifts, today is Friday and that means I am linking up with Company Girl.

Every week I look forward to Company Girl Coffee as it is a blessing to have other like-minded women out in Blogville to share with, receive encouragement and inspiration from.  Be sure to link up with us.

Enjoy your weekend, make memories that will last a lifetime and "untie those ribbons" from the gifts each day holds.

Can You Feel The Love Tonight?

"Don't marry the person you think you can live with; marry only the individual you think you can't live without."  James C. Dobson

Photo: freedigitalphotos.net

In case you didn't know, it's National Marriage Week (February 7th-14th)!

The National Marriage Week has a great web site chocked full of fantastic tips, ideas for cheap dates and there is even a neat "love letter"template to help you write some sweet nothings to your Valentine!

On their site, I found this great little "Love Language Quiz".  Give it try to discover your spouse's love language.  (My love language? Hmmm...is ice cream considered a love language?).

Rachael Anne of Home Sanctuary has a great post on her site this morning about 'The Frog Inside My Prince Charming'. Be sure to 'hop' (ribbet, ribbet) over to her site and check it out!

Lastly, I found a cute site I wanted to share.  Check out The Dating Divas.

It's a fun website packed with lots of creative ideas to, as they say, "strengthen marriage, one date at a time".

Have fun!!!   Be sure to share any creative ideas you have!
