Homeschooling

“So commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these words of mine. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates,  so that as long as the sky remains above the earth, you and your children may flourish in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors." Deuteronomy 11:18-21

I had the privilege to homeschool for 13 years.  It was one of the most challenging, yet most rewarding things I have done in my lifetime.  Of course, there were times when I did not think I could go one more day and I all but chased down the yellow school bus, surrendered, and placed my child on the bus.  Thankfully, The Lord restrained me during those times and in June 2010 our mission at "Burton Academy" was accomplished!!  Through much prayer and God's faithfulness, Jordyn graduated in June 2010 at our state convention graduation ceremony.

In 2006, national magazine, Girl's Life, did an article from Jordyn's perspective of being home schooled.  (click here to read the article and here for a local interview with our paper).

I do not for one moment regret my decision to homeschool.  It was an amazing journey that I would do all over again if given the chance.  If The Lord is calling you to teach your child(ren) at home, please obey.  He will supply all you need to fulfill the call.  If I can home school, then ANYone can do it!

During my years of homeschooling, I encountered the following questions on more than one occasion:

  • What about socialization?
  • Will she get into college?
  • Don't you know what she is missing (at public school)?
  • Can you do this? (in other words, you are not smart enough to teach high school at home!)

Maybe you have had the same questions or have heard them from well meaning (or not so well meaning) friends.  In case you are looking for answers to the above questions,(or if you have other questions about homeschooling) I wanted to share a few of my favorite resources that helped our family during our home schooling journey.
